Retro Racer is a pixel art road racer in the spirit of the coin-op era, built for a phone held upright. the car accelerates on its own and the road never ends. you steer, you overtake, you try to get further than last time.
how it plays
- hold the left half of the screen to steer left, the right half to steer right. that is the whole control scheme.
- real curves pull you outward: if you do not counter-steer you end up in the grass, and off-road costs you speed.
- the right lane carries slower traffic to overtake, the left lane carries oncoming cars closing fast.
- the verge is densely wooded, so leaving the road is never a safe way around traffic.
- three lives, hearts to pick up along the way, and a distance score in metres that becomes your highscore.
the garage
cars are unlocked by distance, not by currency. each one is a different paint job rather than a different set of stats, so nothing you unlock makes the road easier. the preview turns under your finger, showing the car from the back, the side and the front.
under the hood
built in Godot with a pixel perfect portrait setup and a procedurally generated road. score, highscore and the selected car persist locally on the device.
the road, the traffic, the lives and the menus are in. textures, audio and the mobile export come next.
